The focus scripture is Romans 6:8 – “…we believe that, having died with Christ, we will also live with Christ…”
Paul is teaching that believers must at some point grow out of being ‘religious’ and become ‘spiritual’. First of all, get your minds away from the “I don’t need church because I can worship spiritually” nonsense. The church is the gathered community of followers and believers of the Christ. ‘Spiritual’ or not, we need the community for support, guidance and strength for the week, and weeks, to come. There are no solitary Christians. Our faith matures within a community, not off by ourselves. Otherwise we are trying to apply elementary school arithmetic to advanced calculus problems. Paul would not lead us down this road.
What I think Paul is really talking about is something else altogether. Many of us try to live according to ‘Biblical principles’… basically a list of what is allowed and what is not allowed; of what we can or can’t do. Paul thinks it is time for Christians to move beyond living according to a checklist.
It isn’t enough to know right from wrong, we need to learn how to do the right.
See you in Church…
